West Coast Hydrogen Valley - resubmission
Klimatledande Processindustri financed the work on an application to Horizon Europe for a Large Scale Hydrogen Valley. The application was approved, but ended up on the reserve list for funding. As the parties believe that the potential remains, the work continued with new funding from Climate Leading Process Industry. A new application was submitted in April 2025.
The main goal of the application to the Clean Hydrogen Partnership for a Large Scale Hydrogen Valley is to create conditions for the production, integration, and use of green hydrogen throughout the value chain in Western Sweden. The aim is to simultaneously develop replicable business models that can serve as the basis for a comprehensive commercial expansion of hydrogen within the entire regional energy system. The project aims, among other things, to maximize the integration of renewable energy sources available in the region, both onshore (wind and solar) and offshore wind power, by using hydrogen as: (i) a storage medium to manage weather-dependent and transmission capacity limitations in the electricity grid; and (ii) integration of and complement to renewable energy sources to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from industry, heat production, and transportation.
Goal
The purpose of this project is to develop a successful application to the Clean Hydrogen Partnership for a Large Scale Hydrogen Valley. This is a unique opportunity for funding to address the common challenges currently faced in enabling actors within the region to obtain fossil-free hydrogen in a timely manner. In addition to providing financial support for investments through a Hydrogen Valley for actors contributing demonstration facilities to the project, a granted application also opens doors to obtaining additional funding for other investments required for industrial transition and emission reduction.
