Environmental analysis: Opportunities and obstacles for the electrification of industrial processes in the process industries of the West Swedish Chemical and Materials Cluster
Industrial electrification, also called Power-to-X, is identified as a priority development area within the Climate-Leading Process Technology effort area with the goal of establishing a new power pool in the area within 10 years.
Electrification in the industry has greatly increased interest in the industry and in the research world, both in Sweden and internationally. This entails a great development need for new technology, as well as knowledge building regarding system issues around electrification, the role of new technologies connected to electrification, connections between industrial systems and the electricity grid as well as economic and climate aspects under prevailing conditions and various future scenarios.
This project aims to gather knowledge and map opportunities and obstacles for the introduction of Power-to-X techniques in the process industries of the West Swedish Chemical and Materials Cluster, with an emphasis on the chemical and refinery industry in Västra Götaland and Södra's pulp mill in Värö.
Mapping and analysis is carried out based on prevailing regional/local conditions and markets as well as future scenarios. The project intends to identify prioritized areas for continued development within the framework of the Climate-Leading Process Industry. The project also aims to develop a basis for a "regional roadmap" for industrial conversion via electrification in Western Sweden (Västra Götaland and Halland).
