Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to chemicals
The project aims to identify possible technologies for a long-term transition to sustainable production of chemicals from carbon dioxide through electrolysis. The project is aimed at the direct reduction of CO2 via electrolysis (CO2R), i.e. in applications where electrolysis is used for the synthesis of various chemicals directly from CO2 and water, instead of producing hydrogen via electrolysis in combination with subsequent thermocatalytic synthesis.

A state-of-the-art analysis of commercial and research activities has been carried out (with regard to TRL level, economic potential, number of active actors, etc.) for the target molecules that may be relevant. For the most promising process alternatives for the West Swedish chemical industry, an analysis has been carried out to assess integration alternatives and techno-economic potential for location in Stenungsund.
The overall goal was to assess the technology's potential for the electrochemical production of chemicals as a future electrification/CCU alternative within the West Swedish chemical industry.
