AgRawGas

Western Sweden has a large agricultural sector with by-products such as husks and straw, which currently have a low utilization rate. This is Sweden's first project that takes existing technology towards the commercial production of biosyngas based on agricultural residues. The goal is to enable increased production of renewable gas by using new, untested raw materials.

Transitioning industry away from dependence on fossil fuels is one of the most challenging tasks in achieving climate goals. Meva Energy has developed a technology that can replace fossil gas in industry through the production of biosyngas by gasifying biomass. So far, this technology has only been realized using wood-based biomass as fuel. However, there is significant environmental and commercial interest in using other types of biomass than forest-based ones. The short rotation period of agricultural fuels is particularly interesting from a climate perspective.

The project aims to evaluate the use of agricultural-based biomass as fuel in a gasification process and to explore the practical conditions for the commercial use of fuel gas in the West Swedish chemistry and materials cluster. The project is expected to confirm the functional use of oat hull residues and achieve a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 8-9 for such fuel.

Objectives and Goals

  • Evaluate the use of oat hull residues as raw material for the production of renewable biosyngas, with measurements of gas quality, evaluation of process parameters, and measurement of biochar quality.
  • Evaluate logistics chains, fuel preparation, and material flows in the use of oat hull residues as fuel.
  • Evaluate the quality of biochar based on oat hull residues (as opposed to conventional biochar from wood raw material), and assess how it can be best utilized in Western Sweden.
