We are pleased to announce that we have secured funding from Vinnova and Region Västra Götaland for another stage of Climate Leading Process Industry. This means another three years of work towards the vision of a fossil-independent, world-leading industrial region based on renewable and recycled raw materials.
Over the past seven years, Climate Leading Process Industry has developed into a unique collaboration arena for the Swedish chemical and process industry, and our efforts have contributed to accelerating the transition through project activities, collaboration, and dissemination.
The initiative has funded over 40 development projects to a total value of SEK 35 million and contributed to attracting a total of SEK 1.24 billion in development and investment funds.
Among others, Scandinavian Enviro Systems is building a plant in Uddevalla for recycling material from end-of-life tyres, which, according to a long-standing agreement, is to be delivered to Preem, who in turn is adapting its facility in Lysekil to be able to receive bio-based and recycled raw materials in a more integrated manner. Other examples of members who have partly developed their technology within Climate Leading Process Industry are Meva Energy, which is building several plants based on its gasification technology; Ohla Plast, which has developed a bio-attributed prosthetic glove available in retail; and Liquid Wind, which has investment plans for several facilities in Sweden for the production of sustainable methanol for the shipping industry.
The number of members in Climate Leading Process Industry has grown from 33 to 55 since 2018, and the initiative has arranged over 100 meetings, seminars, and workshops. Collaboration within the initiative has laid the foundation for key concerted efforts within areas such as electrification, hydrogen, and CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage).
In the new stage, 2026–2028, Climate Leading Process Industry continues to be managed by Lindholmen Science Park in collaboration with RISE. We will continue to arrange physical and digital events for networking and knowledge dissemination, and will be able to fund collaboration projects with a total of SEK 10 million.
The work in both the innovation arena and the network arena will be divided into three focus areas.
There is great industrial demand for sustainable, circular carbon from various sources. Addressing this requires deeper insight into elemental carbon flows across different scales. The overall goal for this area is to increase knowledge and accelerate the implementation of strategies for sustainable carbon.
The area is implemented via three sub-areas:
Meeting the industry's demands for both sustainable grid-connected electrical energy and access to sustainably produced hydrogen will likely remain challenging in the coming years. Strategies such as system optimisations, flexible production, storage, and other alternatives are needed.
The overall goal for the area is to identify and support the implementation of such strategies, for example by:
Many of the technologies and value chains focused on in the above-mentioned areas have different needs for activities to move closer to commercialisation. This area has the responsibility to support the acceleration of the areas from a commercial perspective, for example by:
